Pearland Fire Department History

The history of the Pearland Fire Department is rooted in community, resilience, and growth.

Long before an organized department existed, fire protection in Pearland relied on neighbors helping neighbors. In the early 1900s, fires were fought by local residents using bucket brigades, with no formal structure or equipment in place.

That reality was made clear in January 1944, when a fire destroyed Pearland Elementary School. With no organized fire department, residents again relied on buckets to fight the flames. Determined to never face that situation again, the community came together in 1946 to form the Pearland Volunteer Fire Department. By 1947, the department had grown to 20 members.

In those early years, the department depended heavily on the support of local businesses and citizens. Resources were limited, and firefighters often faced challenges with staffing, equipment, and training. By 1956, through community contributions, members began attending the Texas A&M Fire School, bringing back modern firefighting techniques to share with the rest of the department.

As Pearland incorporated in 1959 and continued to grow, so did the need for expanded fire protection. The construction of the City Service Center in 1968 marked a major step forward, housing Fire Station 1 along with other city services. Additional stations soon followed, improving response capabilities across the city.

Through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, the department continued to evolve. Advancements in equipment, protective gear, and training improved both firefighter safety and effectiveness. The development of a dedicated training facility in the late 1990s allowed for more advanced, local training opportunities. New stations, apparatus, and specialized capabilities were added as the city expanded.

In October 2007, the department transitioned from a fully volunteer organization to a combination department, adding full time personnel to meet the needs of a growing population.

A major turning point came in 2014, when Pearland Fire and EMS merged into a single department. This unified model ensured firefighters could respond to both fire and medical emergencies, improving efficiency as call volumes increased.

In 2018, the department completed its transition away from volunteer staffing. All remaining volunteer roles became part time or full time positions, marking the evolution into a fully paid, professional fire department.

Today, in 2026, the Pearland Fire Department consists of 151 full time firefighters, making it the largest paid fire department in Brazoria County. With multiple stations, modern equipment, and highly trained personnel, the department is equipped to meet the needs of a growing and dynamic community.

While much has changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: the support of the community. From bucket brigades in the early 1900s to a modern, professional organization today, Pearland Fire continues to grow alongside the community it proudly serves.
